Front Anti-Roll Bar. Clonk, clunk, clunk, twang. B*ll*cks!?!Help! I recently had a front bump-stop replaced on my 1973 P6 3500. When I collected the car from the establishment and proceeded to drive home, the front suspension started making a heavy clunking sound when turning sharply. Once I had checked that nothing was about to fall off, I drove it home and found the problem. The bolts securing the anti roll bar to the top link were very loose! I tightened these up and drove the car. Shortly afterwards the clunking sound returned. The bolts were loose again! I tightened these again and drove the car. Sure enough the problem returned, but the bolts remained tight. I obtained new bolts, cleaned the mating ends of the roll bar, along wih the mating surfaces of the top link (quite rusty) and re-assembled the whole lot with some thread lock smeared generously on all cleaned mating surfaces. The bolts remain nice and tight and the clunking is not so bad, but still occurs from time to time. Any suggestions to eliminate the dreaded clunk (apart from ear plugs)? Rgs Paul Ryan |
